Parks and Recreation Advisory Board receives updates on community projects

Kellogg Park and the Pahrump Fairgrounds project took center stage during Pahrump Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting March 16.

Board members heard from Pahrump Buildings and Grounds Manager Matt Luis, who provided the latest updates on both projects, beginning with the status of Kellogg Park’s engineering bid.

“As of last Friday, it was back on the county manager’s desk to sign the proposal,” he said. “It has been approved, but it’s not officially accepted until it has been signed.”

Luis said county attorneys had a few questions regarding the overall expenses related to the bid.

“There were a couple of questions on why the landscaping costs were so high,” he said. “I met with the engineers and they explained that if you have a flat piece of ground with nothing on it, they can design it right on the computer. The existing landscaping with the mesquite trees, they have to go out there and measure and make it fit. It’s an engineering firm that we have used in the past so we could go right back to them. They are out of Las Vegas.”

In regard to the fairgrounds project, Luis updated the advisory board, while discussing the status and future development plans.

He noted that establishing the infrastructure at the site is job one.

“We met with Valley Electric Association and gave them the calculations of the load we would need out there, so now it’s in Valley Electric’s hands,” he said. “They are going to see what it takes to come up with the cost to get power to that location. There’s been no further progress on the fairgrounds.”

Additionally, Luis provided the board with the 2016 fireworks launch site schedule for area residents.

“We have Memorial Day on May 27th through the 29th, Independence Day will be July 1, through the 4th,” he said. “Labor Day is scheduled from September 2nd through the 4th.”

Town and county officials added two additional days where residents may use the site to shoot off fireworks this year, Luis said.

“The new one is Halloween from October 28th to the 29th,” he said. “New Year’s Eve, will be from December 30th to the 31st. The fairgrounds fared well for us last year and we hope to blow it up and make it a little bit bigger for this year, which should create a little more revenue for the fairgrounds.”

Monies raised from the purchase of fireworks shooter permits go to funding the fairgrounds project.

“The entire goal of this, is if we create a steady revenue from the fairgrounds, then it is possible to get that project bonded,” he said. “It will cost close to $6 million to get the restrooms, snack bar, lights and grass out there.”

Luis said the initial goal is establishing power and water at the site.

“That is the beginning of the project,” he said. “This will be the second year we are looking at revenue coming into the fairgrounds from the fireworks.”

Later this year, the town once again will host Family Movie Night at Petrack Park.

Luis spoke about the costs associated with the free, weekly summertime event.

“On April 5t, it is on the agenda of the county commissioners to approve $12,000 for movie night,” he said. “It’s $5,200 for just the production of it, for setting it up and showing the movies. The average price that we have to pay for the movie rights is $360 to $380 and $2,000 for advertisement. The total came to $12,000 because we have eight movies this year instead of 7. We are asking it to be approved by the Nye County commissioners on April 5th.”

2016 marks the ninth year area residents have enjoyed movies in the park.
