Pahrump junior wrestlers finish strong at regionals

The Pahrump Junior Trojans Wrestling team took fourth place at the Southern Nevada Junior Wrestling Association Championships on March 1-2 at the Boys and Girls Club of Las Vegas.

Much of the success of the high school wrestling team has its roots in junior wrestling which teaches kids from kindergarten up to middle school.

Junior Trojans Coach Ray Cortez was more than satisfied with the team results. He said this year the team had a lot to brag about in the Varsity Division, where his boys finished fourth in league and in the Rookie Division the boys took first place.

“We would have done better, but our team suffered some unfortunate injuries. We were just 27 points out from third place. My son Gunner received the Outstanding Wrestler Trophy for the most team points earned for the whole year,” he said.

The team will travel this weekend up north for the Nevada State Junior Wrestling Finals in Winnemucca. This is the home of the Lowry High School Buckaroos, who just captured their sixth straight state wrestling title.
