Death Valley National Park has been closed since Tropical Storm Hilary caused extensive damage on Aug. 20, 2023.
Smiles Across Pahrump returned this month to the valley for the first time since 2019. Families were invited out for a day of unplugged, technology-free fun, continuing a tradition started by the late Butch “Patches” Harper.
Columnist Dan Simmons just returned to Pahrump from a homecoming trip to British Columbia, Canada and was reminded that many in northern communities continue to be financially and culturally dependent on subsistence hunting and fishing, as were our American families in the not-too-distant past.
