During his two tours in Vietnam, Smith served with the 1st Air Cavalry Division from 1966 to 1969, where he earned several combat decorations. Smith also participated in a 12-part PBS documentary, titled “The Vietnam War – a Television History,” which told the entire history of the war in Southeast Asia.
