New holds potential, but old is warm and wise

As we step into January, we are inundated with new. There are new episodes of our favorite shows to be enjoyed, new resolutions and promises to be attempted, new diets to start, new spring fashions to purchase during the New Year sale. Everywhere we turn, we are being lulled into worshipping the new.

The Mojave Desert climate can result in wide temperature swings, which this year varied from 115 degree highs at the end of June and early July to a low of 18 degrees in mid-January and December 2013.

Paying off debt: The little things mean a lot

In this season of resolutions, I’m going to resolve to spend $1.80 less than usual each day. Would you like to join me? Why would that small amount make a difference? Think about this: $1.80 comes out to roughly $12.50 a week. Saving a measly $12.50 a week on groceries is totally doable, right? Shop the sales, use a few coupons and skip a few convenience items. That’s $50 every 4 weeks or $650 a year you can put in the bank or begin paying off any debt you may have.

Is a desire for romance making you a victim?

Today we’re going to talk about romance scams. In my opinion, they are the cruelest hoaxes of all. Romance scams come in all forms and can appear anywhere. The root is usually the almighty dollar sign, although there can be other motivations such as power, control or downright cruelty.

Get the point, fencing master starts club

Pahrump has a fencing club? That’s usually the general reaction when the subject comes up, but the town really does have one and it has been around for at least two years. There may only be three in the class, but it exists nevertheless.

2013: A sports year in review (part 2)

The fall season had five Pahrump teams getting ready for the playoffs and a few unknowns. The Tonopah team was thinking repeat and so were the Lady Trojans soccer team. The centrist model gets scrutiny

A great Nevada wire service reporter, Russ Nielsen, once told me that if a journalist is being attacked by both sides, it’s a sign the journalist is doing the job right. That’s a common view in my line of work, but I’ve always considered it flawed. For one thing, sometimes there are more than two sides and we are far too willing to project the two-party framework onto public policy generally.
