Muckers: Boys send 8 and girls send 7 to state finals

The Muckers track and field team did an outstanding job in the Southern Nevada Regional Finals at Sunrise Mountain High School in Las Vegas.

The Tonopah boys took 5th of 22 with 123 points and the girls were 10th of 25 with 73 points overall. In Division IV the boys came in second to Beatty and the girls came in third.

For the individual events, each athlete must place in the top four at the regional meet to qualify for state.

Vinny Bagarose, Bobby Hunt, Scotty May and Jimmy Withers were champions of Southern Division IV in the 4x100 relay with a time of 46.86. They repeated the feat in 4x200 relay with a time of 1:38.79.

The 4x400 relay team with Bagarose, May, Brendan Eason and Hunt, achieved the second place in the finals (4:03.62). So did the 4x800 relay team with a time of 9:40.51. This squad is formed by Bagarose, Eason, Conrad Cordova and Manuel Covell-Linares. These teams will be going to state.

Scotty May was the fastest one in 100 (11.81) and 200 meters (23.86). Meanwhile, Jimmy Withers took first in 300m hurdles with a time of 43.57 and Tyler Kirkland achieved the 5th place both in 110 hurdles (20.92) and 300 hurdles (48.03). May and Withers will be going to state.

In shot put, Covell-Linares took second with a distance of 38-02.00 and Scott Klein was 6th in discus (93-02). Linares will be going to state.

The best high jumper from the Muckers was Kirkland, who took 2nd (5-05.00), followed by Tristan Otteson (3rd, 5-05.00) and Withers (4th, 5-04.00). Otteson was 4th in both long jump (15-02.50) and triple jump (31-11.50) categories. Kirkland, Otteson and Withers will be going to state in those events.

On the girls’ side, Ashley Gray was first in shot put with a distance of 29-09.00 and took 2nd in discus (91-11) and will be going to state. She will be going for state champion in both shot put and discus. Her main competition will be Morgan Manley from Round Mountain.

In the 100m hurdles, Megan Thackeray achieved the first place with a time of 20.58 and Elle Snyder took 3rd (20.87). Thackeray was 2nd with 1:01.92 in 300m hurdles. Both girls advance to state.

Snyder, Thackeray, Kendelle Otteson and Jessie Vaculin were 3rd in 4x200 relay with a time of 2:18.27. The 4x100 relay team with Jessie Alva, Vicky Dennis, Snyder and Thackeray was 4th (1:03.48). This relay team will be going to state.

Alva was the best Tonopah high jumper, taking the 3rd place (4-02.00). Sara Zane was 6th (4-00.00) followed by Otteson (3-10.00) and Vaculin (3-08.00). In triple jump, Snyder was 4th (27-00.50). Alva will be going to state in the high jump and Snyder will go in the triple jump.

There were 26 teams in total at the regional meet that took place in Las Vegas last week.

The Nevada State Championship will be today and Saturday in Carson City at Carson City High School.
