Fencing student qualifies for National Junior Olympics
A PVHS junior fencer qualified for the 2016 National Junior Olympics Fencing competition to take place in Cleveland, Ohio in February.
Dylan Metscher has been taking fencing since he was in seventh grade. As a freshman, he was unrated and now two years later he is still going strong in the sport.
He just qualified as a men's U17 Cadet and Junior Divisions with a top three finish at the Nevada Division Junior Olympic Qualifiers recently held in Las Vegas.
Metscher is a 4-year student of Fencing Master Mel North and the Salle de Nord Fencing Club in Pahrump.
North is an international fencing master who has coached numerous world champion and Olympic level fencers. The Maestro has trained men and women who became high school, intercollegiate, and national champions in the three competition weapons, Foil, Epee and Sabre. Several Epee World Championships became prey to his students.
North was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. He coached the Bruin fencing teams for more than 20 years, posting 19 Conference Championships and an unmatched record of 174 Tri-way consecutive wins.
