Sierra Vista hangs on to beat Pahrump

The Trojans girls basketball team struggled with Sierra Vista's good shooting and speed in Wednesday's 48-33 loss.

Sierra Vista came in as the fifth-place team.

At the half, the Trojans (1-10 overall, 0-10 Sunset League) tried to come back from an eleven-point deficit. Lauren Ashford made a couple of layups in the third and even drew a few fouls. Bethany Calvert did her part and even hit a three-pointer to also help the cause. The girls outscored the Mountain Lions 13-12 and closed the gap to a ten-point deficit at the end of the third.

Pahrump, in their haste to close the gaps, had several key turnovers in the fourth that prevented them from lowering the gap and Sierra Vista (9-11, 5-5) seemed to be able to maintain their quickness in the fourth, which created defensive problems for the Trojans.

Sierra Vista was able to keep Calvert from doing any major damage in the second half. Calvert had 4 points. Ashford said that she and Calvert have been trying to step up and score more points since the loss of Jill Smith.

"If we could get two more girls to help us out with the points," she said. "The third-quarter turnovers killed us and we need to be more patient and slow it down to stop the turnovers."

The Trojans were led in scoring by freshman newcomer Sabin Chaidez, who had 9 points.

If the Trojans can get three girls scoring in the double digits they should be able to get a win.

The Trojans host Del Sol (0-17, 0-10) in non-league action on Friday at 5 p.m.
