Trojans golf finish second to Faith Lutheran in league play

Trojans golf played two matches last week, on Tuesday against Bishop Gorman and on Thursday, a league match at Aliante in Las Vegas.

Bishop Gorman finished on top at Pahrump’s home course at Mountain Falls with Mason Lozzi carding a 2-over par that led the Gaels to a 425-460 win.

Derek Moore led the Trojans with an 87. Par at Mountain Falls is 72.

Trojans coach Bob Hopkins said this match between Bishop Gorman and Pahrump helped his team fine-tune their skills, but it was a non-conference match.

On Thursday, Pahrump Valley played at the par-72 Aliante and finished second to Faith Lutheran in a Sunset League match.

The Crusaders carded a 390 to the Trojans’ 439.

Sierra Vista finished in third (464) and Western finished in fourth (598).

Defending state champion Austen Ancell led the Trojans with a 5-over-par 77, which tied him with two others for fourth place.

Hopkins said he was satisfied with the way the team performed.

“We had a slow start, Ancell double bogied on the first hole and ended up with 5-over par on the front nine,” Hopkins said. “Ancell and the team settled down on the back nine and did a lot better.”

Derek Moore carded an 86, Mike Hildebrand an 89, Kelby Lindberg a 90 and Case Murphy a 97.

The lead golfer for Faith Lutheran was Greg Price, who shot par to when the match.
