Pahrump Valley High School open house

Pahrump Valley High School will hold an open house Aug. 5, from 6:30 -7:30 p.m.

A freshman orientation meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m., on Aug. 5.

Student schedule pickup dates are as follows:

Seniors: Monday, August 1, 7 a.m. to noon

Juniors: Tuesday, August 2, 7 a.m. to noon

Wednesday, August 3, 7 a.m. to noon

Thursday, August 4, 7 a.m. to noon

The first day of school for Nye County students is August 8.

Grief Share

A faith-based grief share course to help those who are grieving loves ones began on July 23 and will be held on Saturdays, at 1 p.m., at Central Valley Baptist Church, located at 3170 S. Blagg.

Shadow Mountain Quilters

The Shadow Mountain Quilters, who are 21-years strong, meet every Thursday at the Bob Ruud Community Center, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information call Sally at 425-359-5512.

County services, WIC in Beatty

Nye County Health and Human Services and WIC will be in Beatty at the community center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Aug. 2.

Their aim is to have the opportunity to show the many ways that both offices can assist with any services that may be available.

JROTC car wash

The Pahrump Valley High School JROTC will hold a car wash to raise funds for needed uniforms and their military ball being held later in the year on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The wash is free but donations are gratefully accepted.

Desert Square Dancers

The Desert Squares Square Dance Club invites anyone interested in square dancing to participate in an early, free dance on Aug. 6, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Come meet some new people and see if you would like to join them.

Then, at 7 p.m., until 10 p.m., “Hot August Nights”, a dance for serious square dancers will be held. The price is a $10 donation at the door and finger foods will be available. Dress is casual, square dance attire is not required.

The Desert Square Dancers are sponsored by the Pahrump Arts Council and meet at 5 p.m., on Thursdays, at Pahrump Methodist Church, located at 1300 E. Highway 372.

Classical music group

A classical music group is forming in Pahrump to play classical and jazz music together. Any instruments will do.

The Kiwanis Club of Pahrump Valley is sponsoring the Hugo, Oklahoma-based Culpepper and Merriweather Great Combined Circus which is coming to Pahrump at Petrack Park on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. There will be two 90-minute shows each day at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., with a free tent-raising and behind-the-scenes tour starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

A little more than a year and a half ago, the new 79-dog capacity no-kill Nye County Animal Shelter opened and promptly received a baptism by fire a few days later when more than 300 abused and neglected Caucasian shepherds were seized, overwhelming the facility’s capacities and resources, and capturing national headlines.
