Game Day: Trojans vs. Del Sol

The Trojans expect to ride the success of last week’s win against Eldorado and improve this week.

“Del Sol this week, our plan is similar: pressure defensively and keep the train rolling on offense,” Pahrump Valley coach Joe Clayton said.

This week will pit two running teams against each other and that’s where the similarities stop. The Trojans has much more experience in the key positions than the Dragons.

Expect Pahrump Valley to run when they host the Dragons starting at 7 p.m. The Trojans ran the ball the entire time against Eldorado with the exception of one pass play.

The Trojans’ top rusher was senior running back Aaron Fuentes, who had eight carries for 101 yards rushing. The other back that carried was Case Murphy, who had five carries for 38 yards.

The advantage definitely is with the Trojans due to their experience in key positions.

Note: The student council is asking the fans to support the Trojans by wearing black at the game they are calling it a “Blackout.”

The opposition and what to expect

Looking at the Del Sol roster, not much has changed since last year. Del Sol coach Gary Macki is in his fourth year. He finished last year at the bottom of the Sunrise League with a 1-8 record. Like last year they will rely on all underclassmen. The Trojans are familiar with their double-wing set as they run out of it occasionally and regularly played teams that have run it like Cheyenne and Boulder City.

The Dragons are looking to turn things around this year with two of the playoff teams moving to the Sunset League, Desert Pines and Sunrise Mountain. They already have one win under their belt after beating Western 24-12 last week. The Dragons beat Western on the ground with 256 yards rushing. Look for Del Sol to try to establish the run early on the Trojans. The lead back for Del Sol was Taariq Flowers with 153 yards and then Jason Hoyer with 72 yards.
