Girls golf: Trojans win their second Sunset match
Senior Krista Toomer and sophomore Makalea Petrie led the girls golf team to their second Sunset League win of the season on Thursday at Mountain Falls.
The girls were hampered by gusty winds that blew balls around and made it harder for them to see.
“The wind kicked up a lot of dust in our eyes,” Makalea Petrie said.
Pahrump carded a 440; Desert Pines took second (541), and Mojave (552) took third.
The top individual of the match was Western’s Carolyn Lemmon, carding an 89.
Mojave’s top golfer, Grace Cano, carded a 124 and Desert Pines’ top golfer, Aajah James, carded a 130.
Petrie and Toomer both carded a 102. Freshman Jessica Pearson carded a 114, senior Jordan Egan and junior Desirae Hembree each had a 122.
“I would have liked Petrie and Toomer to be in the 90s but the winds were high that day,” Trojans coach Bob Hopkins said. Petrie was 13-over par on the front nine and 17-over par on the back nine. Toomer was 14-over par on the front nine and 17-over par on the back.
Petrie said she felt good going into the last nine holes.
Hopkins liked sophomore Jessica Pearson’s front nine.
“Jessica is coming around, she shot a 57 on the front nine and then at Wild Horse she shot a 52 on the front nine,” he said.
Hopkins stressed that his girls need to play more. Both Petrie and Toomer have nice straight drives. The two have no problems hitting the ball straight on the fairway, but they both need to improve their short games like the rest of the team.
“The girls can expect to practice for an hour on putting and a good 45 minutes of chipping,” Hopkins said. “The boys in 2008 lost the regional because of putting, but then they worked on it and came in second at state. When we are 25 feet away we shouldn’t be three-putting. They will figure out how to improve their short game.”
He added that the thing about golf is a lot of individual practice could help a golfer.
“I know they are all working on it, but they all need to get more serious about it (short game),” he said.
The next Sunset League match will be at Mountain Falls on Wednesday at noon.
