Beatty volleyball loses to Owyhee at state

Once again the Beatty Hornets were the last standing of all the Nye County volleyball teams in the post season. The Hornets went to state for their third appearance in three years, losing to Owyhee in four sets, 25-11, 25-20, 18-25 and 25-21.

Despite the semifinals loss to Owyhee in Reno, the Hornets can be proud of one of their best records in three years, finishing 18-5. It was Hornets coach Steve Sullivan’s second appearance at state since taking over the team last year.

Owyhee went on to the state final on Saturday and lost to Pahranagat Valley in three sets, 25-19, 25-14, 25-13. It was the Panthers’ 18th state title.

Pahranagat Valley has won three of the last four state titles, five of the last seven and 13 since 2000.

“It never gets old,” Panthers coach Ginger Whipple said to NevadaPreps. “It’s a cliche, but really it doesn’t because they’re different groups every year and you want it as bad for every girl.”

Karley Whipple added nine kills; Allyse Frehner had 21 assists, and Morgan Harris had 13 assists for Pahranagat Valley (23-6).

In 3A volleyball, it was Truckee over Moapa Valley in Reno on Saturday for the state title in five sets, 19-25, 25-14, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-9.
