Extreme Heat U14 team takes second in Utah tourney

Pahrump Youth Softball Association’s Extreme Heat U14 team continued its winning ways this summer. The team played in a nine-team tournament in Cedar City, Utah over the July Fourth weekend and finished in second place.

“This was probably one of the most competitive tournaments we’ve played in this summer,” Extreme Heat coach Rich Lauver said.

Beginning Friday, the girls played two games, winning the first game but losing to the Voltage in the second game, placing as the number two seed.

In bracket play on Saturday, the girls beat the Dixie Ice 10-5 and the Voltage 5-2. The team lost to Cedar City Synergy in a 2-1 pitcher’s duel, resulting in their first loss in the double-elimination tourney.

“We had to then play Voltage (a team from Provo), who we were 1-1 against thus far,” Lauver said. “We beat Voltage 10-3, putting us into the championship, needing to beat Synergy twice to bring home the title.”

Pahrump was down 3-0 to Synergy, but rallied to put up five runs in the late innings, to come away with a 5-3 victory and into the championship game.

Extreme Heat had an 8-4 lead going into the final inning, and their sixth game of the day, Synergy’s bats came alive and they survived to win the championship 11-8.

“Extreme Heat fought hard to come back in each of the six games on Saturday,” the coach said. “Although we still have some defensive work to do, the weekend was a great step forward.”
