Is there a hidden agenda concerning well owners?

I've heard whispers here and there that Las Vegas, a city right on the edge of one of the nation's biggest dams and reservoirs, is eyeballing the Pahrump Valley basin's water supply. That wouldn't surprise me. For all I know, California is probably eyeballing our water supply and that wouldn't surprise me either. And neither would it surprise me if a few people who hold a boatload of the basin's water rights have dollar signs in their eyes. A possible hidden agenda, you think?

Meanwhile, "authorities" would like to meter our wells and implement plans that will, as Greg Hafen put it, "use our water wisely." I have a question or two. Who's the expert that will determine whether I am using my water wisely or unwisely? Will a Water Nazi show up on my private property to tell me I ran my dishwasher one too many times this month? Or that I cannot wash my whites and colors separately? I took too long a shower?

They keep telling us that it isn't going to affect existing wells. I suggest that the end of that sentence is "for now." This is one slippery slope! Citizens beware. "Never let the camel get his nose under the tent."

News flash: When the casinos turn off their fake waterfalls and fountains, empty their massive swimming pools, shut down their shark tanks and water parks, when the town of Pahrump empties the public pool and fake lakes and shuts down the waterfall and fountains, when the local hotels empty their pools and hot tubs, then maybe we can discuss whether or not I can give my trees and plants a drink of water. Until then, it's my private property, it's my well that I paid for and maintain, it's Mother Nature's water and it's not for sale.

Lions Club thanks Moose Lodge for benefit

The Pahrump Valley Lions Club members would like to thank the members of the Pahrump Moose Lodge for the recent donation dinner they held to benefit our Letters to Santa Program.

The spaghetti dinner was delicious as were the baked goods the Ladies of the Moose had for sale.

The monies raised from the dinner, bake sale and raffles will go a long way to purchase gifts for local children who write their letters to Santa. The Moose Lodge is a true community partner and we thank you for all you do for the citizens of Pahrump throughout the year.

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to your member who were recently involved in a serious traffic accident.
