Weidknecht was sworn in as new Beatty postmaster
BEATTY - Peggy Weidknecht was sworn in as Beatty's new postmaster in a brief ceremony at the town post office Tuesday, Feb. 23. The oath of office was administered by Dana Urbanski, postmaster of North Las Vegas.
Weidknecht's first career was as a specialist for Barstow College's program at Fort Irwin, California, where she performed a range of administrative duties. She tried her hand at retirement, but said she found she just wasn't ready for it yet.
After moving to Amargosa Valley, she went to work as a part-time flex postal worker. While working there she had opportunities to work at the Beatty post office when it was short-handed.
Although she resides in Amargosa Valley, Weidknecht says, "I love Beatty. I love the people."
A number of Beatty residents were on hand for the swearing in and shared a celebratory cake served by Junior Miss Beatty Simone Guevara.
The Beatty post office has gone through a period of adjustment following the retirement of postmaster Nancy Johnson and long-time postal clerks Jan Lasorsa and Carol Stephens. After some difficulties when it was staffed by new people unfamiliar with the town and its residents, it is operating more effectively.
