Baseball: Trojans need strong finish to make playoffs
The Trojans baseball team is hanging onto playoff hopes by a thread.
They lost to Spring Valley in league action on Friday 14-3 and then beat Desert Pines on Saturday 10-3 in non-league action.
Trojans coach Brian Hayes was realistic about the loss to the Grizzlies (16-6 overall, 9-1 Sunset League).
“Spring Valley is a good baseball team and they are just better than we are,” Hayes said. “I think they, and Faith Lutheran play at a different level than the rest of us in the division. Desert Pines (8-17, 2-9) was a weak team, but it was nice to see the guys pull out a win.”
Parker Hart led the team against the Jaguars with 3 hits, including a triple and both Braddah Costa and Drew Walker had doubles. Costa threw five innings of one-run ball, allowing 4 hits, while striking out 11 for the win.
Helping keep their playoff hopes alive is Clark (11-12, 5-5), the team that is one game ahead of them. Clark lost to Cheyenne on Friday 6-7. Pahrump plays at Cheyenne (3-8, 3-7) this Thursday and then at Mojave (15-9, 3-7) on Monday. Clark still must play Spring Valley on Thursday and Sierra Vista on Monday.
Pahrump returns home to play division leader Faith Lutheran (18-5, 10-0) on Wednesday.
Hayes remains positive.
“We need to win three of four and Clark has to win one of four,” he said. “It will certainly be tough, but at least we do still have a chance.”
The Trojans played Sierra Vista (10-15, 6-4) on Tuesday, which was past deadline. A win over the Mountain Lions would help the Trojans immensely.
