Sheriff’s office holds pair of events to inform seniors of scams
Detectives from the Nye County Sheriff’s Office focused on educating seniors on the various scams that target their demographic this week.
Detectives from the NCSO gave a pair of safety presentations at two locations heavily populated by area seniors. Detective James Brainard talked to a group at Inspirations Senior Living, while Detective Sergeant Michael Eisenloffel spoke to residents at Sunset Community Senior Center.
The two presentations focused on general safety and how to avoid fraud crimes. Brainard discussed several suggestions for the safety of seniors suffering from dementia, while Eisenloffel teamed up with Susan Bai of Meadows Bank to provide suggestions on how to avoid becoming a victim of bank related fraud crimes.
The sheriff’s office warns there are numerous frauds and scams in existence and although most of them have been around for years, there are still people falling victim to them every day. In the majority of fraud cases, scammers are located in different areas of the country and in foreign countries, making apprehending those responsible almost impossible.
The Nye County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to be safe and not fall prey to scams and other forms of fraud. In order to do that, the NSCO asks the public to be vigilant and skeptical of anything that “sounds too good to be true.”
Popular scams that are being used at the moment include the Internet virus scams, free money scams, social media scams and Craigslist scams, among others.
