Pahrump aviators seek new model enthusiasts

UPDATE on Friday:

WIND DELAYS MODEL AVIATION EVENT: High winds are postponing the Pahrump Valley Aviators’ “Fun Fly” for one week. The event is now planned for 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m. April 8 at Murphy Field in Pahrump. The free event seeks to help young people — mainly about ages 16 to 20 — learn model aviation.

EARLIER STORY:

The Pahrump Valley Aviators seeks to show young people that the sky is limitless.

The group is holding its “Fun Fly” from 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m. Saturday at Murphy Field.

The free event seeks to help young people — mainly about ages 16 to 20 — learn model aviation.

“They are the next group of people who will come into the hobby, and we’d like to introduce them to it,” said Bob Cameron, secretary of the nonprofit group.

At least 12 model airplanes are expected to be on hand. Flying is starting about 10 a.m. with the radio-controlled model airplanes reaching 100 to 150 feet off the ground, Cameron said. Takeoffs, landings and aerobatics also are featured.

“For new people, maybe we will give them stick time with an instructor and let them fly around the patch while it (model plane) is still up,” Cameron said.

He’s been active in model airplanes about 60 years.

“We’d like to introduce other people to it,” he said.

“It’s fun to get away from the 6 o’clock news sometimes. Smile, and come out.”

The “Fun Fly” also is to feature coffee and ice water.

The field is near Murphy and Bannavitch streets.
