Pahrump lands first Tractor Supply retail store in S. Nevada

Tractor Supply Co., a big box retail chain that offers products for the working farm, hobby farm and animal owner, is setting up shop in Pahrump, marking the retailer’s first location in Southern Nevada.

Construction crews have been working on the 19,097-square-foot Tractor Supply store at 900 E. Highway 372, at the southwest corner of South Bolling Road and Highway 372, since March, a representative from the Brentwood, Tennessee-based retailer said. The store is pegged for completion in the fall at the roughly 4.25-acre site.

“Tractor Supply Co. supports the rural lifestyle of all the communities it inhabits,” said a Tractor Supply representative. “Because of Pahrump’s bustling agriculture industry, it made it a natural choice for a Tractor Supply.”

Tractor Supply carries an array of products, including work wear and boots, tractor and trailer parts and accessories, lawn and garden supplies, power tools and a variety of food and supplies for cats and dogs, horses and livestock. Various breeds of chicks or hatchlings are also available through online purchase.

The Pahrump location is the third in Nevada. The company entered the Nevada market in 2013 in Carson City and later opened a store in Minden. There are no plans, to date, for additional locations in the state, according to a Tractor Supply representative.

Overall, Tractor Supply has more than 1,600 locations in every state but Alaska. The company employs about 24,000 team members, according to a press release from Tractor Supply in January 2017.

What it means

Owners of existing shops carrying similar products seem to have little worry about the new retailer coming in.

“I don’t see it as competition, I see it as them bringing in new items for our valley,” said Sandi Tucker, owner of Acme General Store. Tucker’s store is just around the corner from the new big box location at 800 West St.

“Although we have overlapping, every one of the (feed) stores has overlapping here in town,” Tucker said.

Tractor Supply will be the fifth store in town to carry livestock products and animal feed, though the local Wal-Mart also carries several brands of animal feed as well.

Tucker, who has been in business for 22 years in Pahrump, said she has many live animals, including reptiles, chickens and other birds, for sale in her store, along with carrying fresh eggs. The two stores might overlap in things such as dog, cat and livestock food.

“Our lines that we carry are not necessarily their lines,” Tucker said.

Acme also has more options than what sits on the shelves at the store.

“We special order and try to do our best to get what people need, even if we don’t carry it,” said Missy Handler, store manager at Acme.

Other feed store owners, who did not want to be identified for this story, agreed that Tractor Supply’s presence wouldn’t affect their operations negatively.

Growth steady

Tractor Supply has been gaining traction nationally in the past several months.

The company grew its number of location by 8 percent in 2016, adding 113 new stores to its profile. According to a press release from the company, Tractor Supply is “expecting mid-single-digit store growth in 2017,” according to a press release from Tractor Supply in January.

Locally, the new Tractor Supply store could be a boon for the economy.

According to Tractor Supply representatives, the average store employs about 12 to 15 people.

Tractor Supply Co. is a publicly-traded company and sits on the Nasdaq under the ticker TSCO. The closing stock price on June 23 was $52.64 a share. That’s down from the same period last year when the stock traded at more than $90 a share on the Nasdaq.
