Pahrump secures federal funds for Kellogg Park

Federal funds are heading to the Pahrump area.

Kellogg Park will receive a $211,519 grant from the National Park Service for phase 1 development.

The National Park Service announced that Nevada’s communities will receive almost $700,000 in Land and Water Conservation Fund grants to improve the quality and accessibility of Nevada’s public parks and playgrounds.

Tom Crosson, chief of Public Affairs at the National Park Service, said that the grants were apportioned in 2016, but the money was just sent to grantees.

“The states have five-year recreation plans that identify priority need, as well as criteria that are supposed to support project selection to help meet those needs,” Crosson said. “The review and determination about project consistency with the state’s plan and recreation goals happen at the state level.”

The money will be spent on phase 1 objectives for the park, which includes a cultural and environmental review of the land, the construction of a well, a lighted path, a parking lot and a restroom.

Under the grant, Miguel Ribera Skate Park in Reno will get $225,000 and Ross Gold Playground in Carson City will get $261,657.

In addition, Henderson will get $17,669 for the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve signage and dock, and Las Vegas will receive $99,984 for the Jaycee Community Park, inclusive of a playground. Interpretive displays at 10 Nevada state parks will get $30,675.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund was established by Congress to safeguard natural areas, water resources and cultural heritage and to provide recreation opportunities to all Americans, according to its website.

The fund program provides grants to state and local governments and acquires lands, waters, and interests for recreation management objectives of federal land management agencies.
