Fire crews endure busy week in Pahrump area

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Services crews were met with an assemblage of fires and motor vehicle collisions over the past week.

Fire Chief Scott Lewis said crews were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 372 and Charleston Park Avenue for a vehicle collision on Monday, Aug. 21, just after 4 p.m., where at least three people were injured, but none required medical transport.

Car versus semi

On Wednesday, Aug. 23, emergency crews responded to a vehicle collision along south Highway 160 at the Trout Canyon turnoff just after 2:30 p.m.

“Upon arrival, crews found a vehicle versus a semi-truck,” Lewis said. “There was significant damage to the rear of the sedan. While there was no entrapment, there were injuries and one patient was transported to the local hospital.”

The following day, crews were dispatched to Highway 160 near Rainbow Avenue, for another two-vehicle collision just before 1 p.m., involving an NHP cruiser.

One trooper suffered a minor leg injury as he activated his emergency lights and attempted to make a U-turn to perform a traffic stop.

While there was no entrapment, three people were injured and the trooper was transported to Desert View Hospital.

Meanwhile, on Aug. 24 crews responded to a reported 15-acre, lightning-sparked brush fire roughly eight miles northeast of Pahrump. On its social media page, the forest service said its agency and federal Bureau of Land Management crews were responding. The fire was reported at 100 percent contained the following day. The final acreage was downsized to 6.5 acres. No injuries were reported from the blaze.

Early morning blaze

Fire crews also responded to a reported structure fire in the area of Second and Bolling streets on Friday, Aug. 25, at 1 a.m.

“Crews arrived and found an accessory outbuilding well involved, with an approximately one-half acre of ground, mixed-fuel brush fire,” Lewis said. “While there was no immediate exposures, crews quickly controlled that fire and there was no further extension among the mixed fuels that were available. That fire is also under investigation.”

On Saturday, Aug. 26, crews were dispatched for what was initially reported as a structure fire along the 900 block of East Bourbon Street at approximately 3:42 p.m.

“While crews were responding, they were updated that it was actually a brush fire next to an apartment complex,” Lewis noted. “Upon arrival, crews found an approximate one-acre, fast-moving grass fire, with mixed fuels as well. Crews quickly controlled that fire without extension to the nearby apartment structures.”

Destructive structure fire

Fire crews got off to an early start on Monday, Aug. 28, as they responded to a reported structure fire along the 3700 block of North Point Drive.

“Upon arrival, crews found a fully-involved doublewide manufactured dwelling with exposures on each side,” Lewis said. “Crews commenced an exterior-defensive attack based on the fire conditions that were found upon arrival.”

“They quickly controlled that fire and prevented it from advancing to nearby exposure structures. There were no injuries and all occupants were accounted for. The investigation revealed that it was an accidental fire, most likely related to a heating appliance used for pest control within the structure.”
