Desert View Hospital to award a pair of scholarships

Graduating high school seniors that have medical aspirations can get some assistance to pay for schooling through a scholarship program organized by Desert View Hospital.

The hospital’s charitable foundation, The Desert View Hospital Foundation, will award its first two scholarships this spring to a pair of Pahrump Valley High School seniors at the end of the year senior awards ceremony at the high school.

Both scholarships are for $1,000 and will be awarded to students that are graduating in 2015, who plan pursuing a career in healthcare, who have been accepted into an accredited institution.

The qualifying fields of study include, but are not limited to, physician, nurse, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and radiologic therapy.

The money for these scholarships was raised by Desert View’s annual golf tournament that has taken place the past two years.

All interested applicants must provide an official transcript , provide at least two references and/or letters of recommendation with their completed application.

“We are happy to be able to award these scholarships this year to students pursuing a healthcare career,” said Kelly Adams, Chief Executive Officer at Desert View Hospital. “There is a growing shortage of healthcare workers in our country, and we look forward to seeing these students excel and become part of the healthcare workforce in the years to come.”

With the shortage of doctors in the area, the hospital would love for those who accept the awards to come back and work after they graduate college, but that is not a requirement for the application process.

“We would love to see scholarship recipients return to Pahrump to work in the healthcare industry here,” said Meagan Kowalski, marketing director for the hospital.

Although the scholarships will be awarded at the end of the year, the money awarded will be paid directly to the institution for tuition after the student has enrolled in their second year of continuing education.

Applications are available at Pahrump Valley High School, at Desert View Hospital, and online at www.desertviewhospital.com.

The application deadline is Friday, May 8.
