Manse Elementary student honored in Pahrump
She has read more than 4 million words since the beginning of the school year and wants to become a marine biologist or an oceanographer later in life.
Evidently, Manse Elementary School fifth-grader Aubrey Egan is off to a good start, according to Nye County School District Superintendent Dale Norton, as Egan earned the title of Superintendent of the Day this month.
Egan and Norton began the day at 8 a.m., with a very busy itinerary with stops at several elementary schools and district facilities across the valley.
Norton said he planned a few surprises for Egan during their travels.
“We started the morning at Manse Elementary School and from there we went to Floyd Elementary School where she read in a classroom of her friend,” Norton said. “We then did a surprise visit to her kindergarten teacher who teaches at Floyd Elementary School. I told her former kindergarten teacher that I had a guest with me that she might want to see and that was a lot of fun.”
After a visit to the district’s transportation department, both toured the school district office to meet staff and hold a press conference.
Though Egan maintains a modest and demure personality, she fielded questions from local media outlets about her reading prowess.
“I read over 4 million words and I really enjoy reading fiction books,” Egan softly said. “My favorite author is Erin Hunter. I started reading on the first day of school and I finished last Monday.”
Norton noted each student’s reading progress is calculated through what’s known as the Accelerated Reader Program, which actually determines how many pages and words are in each of the storybooks.
“She also has to be proficient as well, by passing the test with 80 percent or better,” Norton said. “I believe we have had at least five students who were selected as superintendent of the day up to this point. Ms. Egan has also learned how busy of a day a superintendent can have on a regular basis.”
Following the press conference, both superintendents toured J.G. Johnson Elementary School before enjoying lunch at Port of Subs, followed by a sweet treat at Dairy Queen.
Norton and Egan arrived back at Manse just in time for Egan to read to fellow classmates.
