Traveling folk art exhibit at Beatty Museum
BEATTY — A traveling exhibit from the Nevada Arts Council will be on display at the Beatty Museum through June 8.
The exhibit, entitled “One is Silver, the Other is Gold: Celebrating 25 Years of Nevada Folklife Apprenticeships” features the work of 22 artists who have received grants as master or apprentice artists in a variety of folk traditions.
Apprentices worked with master craftsmen/artists to learn and help preserve a variety of traditional art forms.
The Arts Council’s statement on the exhibit says that “the artists come from a range of tribal, ethnic, cultural, and occupational groups found throughout Nevada. They include artists from among the indigenous Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe peoples and the skilled ranchers, miners, loggers, and railroad workers long a part of the state’s history. They also include more recent immigrants from all parts of North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. All contribute to the vibrant face and culture of Nevada today.”
Some 160 master artists and 243 apprentices have participated in the program. The exhibit features the work of Hasna Akbas, Eddie Brooks, Fred Buckmaster, Clara Castillo, Sue Coleman, Florine Conway, Bernadine DeLorme, Wesley Dick, Charles Herring, Donald “Ike” Hicks, Linda Johnson-Comas, Barbara Lierly, JoAnn Martinez, Virginia McCuin, Edward McDade, Angie McGarva, Adam Nordwall, Vilma Parra, Maria Sanchez, Larry Schutte, Romeo Siguenza, and Zoria Zetaruk.
The Beatty Museum, 417 W. Main St., is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
