VEA issues scam alert

Valley Electric Association, Inc. is warning community members regarding reports of a telephone scam targeting the cooperative's members.

VEA has received reports of local businesses and residents receiving calls after business hours reportedly requesting immediate payment, threatening to turn off the member's power if payment wasn't made at the time of the call.

The callers also allegedly suggested VEA members purchase prepaid credit cards and wait for another VEA call to receive further information on the prepaid credit cards.

VEA wants community members to know that these individuals have no association with the cooperative. VEA said they never call members after business hours or on weekends to discuss their bills.

If any member receives such a call, VEA strongly advises against providing any personal information over the phone, including social security numbers, credit card numbers, birth dates and account numbers. Members who have been contacted by anyone posing as a VEA employee who demands immediate payment for a utility bill should hang up immediately and contact Nye County Sheriff's Detective Sergeant Mike Eisenloffel, at 775-751-7000 or meisenloffel@co.nye.nv.us or Detective Corey Fowles at cfowles@co.nye.nv.us.

VEA also urges its members to call the cooperative's main office at 775-727-5312 if they have been targeted by this scam or have any questions.
