Boys cross-country off to great start for the season
Senior runner and last year’s Class 3A state champion in cross-country, Bryce Odegard, had the fastest boys time on the course in Red Rock Invitational in Las Vegas out of 82 runners in the field.
At Saturday’s 19-school meet, Odegard posted the fastest time on the three-mile course, 15 minutes, 36 seconds.
His efforts helped the team achieve a fourth-place finish in a highly competitive field dominated by bigger and faster Class 4A teams.
For Odegard, it was all about the team and he downplayed his own accomplishments.
“Oh man, the guys ran great,” Odegard said. “I believe if we would have had the Sonerholm brothers, we would’ve beaten Centennial easy. But our subs stepped in and ran hard for us, which solidified our fourth-place finish. It was exciting.”
Odegard said he liked the way he started out the season.
“I have high hopes for the rest of the season,” he said. “I am hoping to continually improve and hopefully run my best race of the year at the end of the year.”
Arbor View took first place as a team with 36 points, Clark was second (72), Centennial third (80) and then Pahrump Valley (102). The Trojans were the only Class 3A team to finish in the top five.
Helping Odegard with the fourth place was sophomore Grant Odegard, 16th place (17:26); senior Cole Goodman, 21st place (17:34); and Jacob Cipollini, 25th place (17:43).
For the girls, junior Katherine Goodman ran the fastest time, (22:11), coming in 18th place in a strong field of girls. Senior Grace Plumb was next for the Trojans at 25th place, (23:09); and sophomore Terrena Martin was 34th, (24:24).
There was a newcomer meet and senior Cynthia Martin took 10th in that, (22:27).
