VEA holds Bucket Truck drive for school supplies

In an effort to support schools in southwestern Nevada, Valley Electric Association, Inc. (VEA), will host its annual Fill the Bucket Truck School Supply Drive at multiple locations in Pahrump.

VEA encourages community members to participate by donating during the charitable event, which will provide a variety of essential supplies to 11 schools within VEA’s service area.

The company will accept donations of school supplies and cash at multiple locations from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 2. VEA employees and Ambassadors will be stationed at select locations to collect donations.

To reward those who contribute to the drive, each donor will receive a ticket for a chance to win one of 10 power bill credits ranging from $25 to $100.

Donations of both cash and supplies will be accepted at the following drop-off locations:

Smith’s Food &Drug located at 601 S. Highway 160; Albertson’s grocery store in Pahrump Junction and the Walmart Supercenter.

School supply donations only will be accepted at Pahrump Valley Auto Plaza, 2060 E. Charleston Park Ave., and Threadz Clothing Company, 1231 S. Loop Road.

Lists of requested supplies will be available at each drop-off location.

In addition, VEA will also accept donations at its Pahrump office, located at 800 E. Nevada Highway 372, through Aug. 1.

In 2013, the Fill the Bucket Truck School Supply Drive set a record for the annual event by collecting 22 buckets, or 319 cubic feet, of school supplies. Since its inception, the program has collected 1,667.5 cubic feet of supplies for local schools.

“Our team is always impressed by the continued generosity of our neighbors in southwestern Nevada,” said Dax Whittle, member and communications coordinator for VEA. “VEA’s annual Fill the Bucket Truck School Supply Drive plays a valuable role in helping local schools, and we look forward to another successful event this year.”

Beatty burros are burdening town — officials aim to remove some members of massive herd

The Bullfrog Herd Management Area, which includes Beatty, is grossly overpopulated with wild burros. According to previously stated management goals, the population of the animals should be kept to around 80 burros, but it has far exceeded that number for years. The last time a gather was carried out, there were more than 800 burros, and the BLM removed more than 400, which was the capacity of the agency’s holding facilities.
