Staff and EMTs displayed professionalism, compassion

My husband and I would like to give a big shout-out and Kudos to the staff at Terrible’s Road House, the EMTs from Pahrump Fire and Rescue, and to Desert View Hospital for the over-the-top compassion and professionalism they showed to our visiting friends from Idaho and to us on Saturday, December 2nd.

After breakfast at the Road House, we were sitting there talking when our friend Joe suddenly slumped over. Staff and customers immediately came to help and called 911. They stayed by our side and on the phone with 911 until the EMT‘s arrived to take Joe to the hospital. The EMT’s were great and very encouraging that Joe was OK and did not appear to be in any immediate danger. He was admitted for observation and multiple tests were run. The nurses and doctors at Desert View were absolutely wonderful to Joe and his wife. Fortunately, all tests were negative and Joe was released the next morning.

We wish to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts who helped to make our friends feel welcome and comfortable and for the outstanding care they were given.

Resident broken-hearted over missing dog

My name is Laurie Knight. On Monday, Nov. 20, between 10 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., my beloved Honey dog vanished from my yard. We are located at 3261 W. Basin Ave. Honey is a long-haired terrier-yorkie mix with tan-honey colored fur. She is six years old and weighs about 10 pounds. She is a fun-loving little dog and although she can be shy with strangers, she loves to grin at people. She has never had the habit of getting out and running away. My yard is fenced and the front gate is always shut. I posted this information on Facebook with a picture on the same day Honey went missing. Also, Home Again Pet Finders and Amber Pet Alert were notified of my missing Honey. Flyers have been posted around town, including the animal shelter behind the sheriff’s office. Honey had a black collar with tags, as well as a little black coat with red and white Nebraska University football emblems on the back.

If someone took Honey from my yard and you feel as though you have to keep her, I understand, as she is a sweetheart. All I ask is that you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, give her the same warm, loving home that I have provided for her. If I anonymously receive her collar and coat, I would be completely grateful. If you have any information about her remains, I would absolutely love to have my beloved Honey cremated.

Pahrump has been my home for 25.5 years and this is a most wonderful community, wherein animal abuse and abandonment are illegal, and looked down upon. This community does not believe in animal cruelty and I am proud to be a part of it.

Thank you for listening and for your help. I am praying to God that I will not have to live with the burden of never knowing what happened to my beloved Honey Dog.

Reader comments on taxes, government and tithing

Wow, Mr. Ferrell, you’d better stop doing your own taxes or find a better accountant.

The three areas I do have some knowledge in are farming, construction contracting and income-producing properties.

The Reagan tax cuts accelerated depreciation on income-producing property from 30 years to 15 years, with reaching back allowances and carry forward allowances. There weren’t any eliminating of deductions, including property taxes. Some other areas of depreciation for equipment and capital projects went down to three and five years. This stimulated many areas of manufacturing as well as services, which meant hiring in even unrelated sectors.

I certainly don’t claim to know the entire tax code; never met anyone who did. Ask a complex question to 10 IRS auditors and chances are you’d get 10 different answers. Recall President Obama’s treasury secretary, Tim Geithner, getting in hot water, having to pay back taxes, interest and fines, for what he called careless mistakes.

Next point, I grew curious why Warren Buffet suddenly became a big supporter of Obama and all his policies. It seems Berkshire Hathaway, (who is Buffet), at the time Obama was blocking the pipeline from Canada, was a major holder of a railway tank car building company as well as a railway company to carry all that oil. You are free to draw your own conclusions on motives as well as safety and environmental impacts of each.

Next point, anyone old enough to remember the news about 25 years ago, as well as recently (think Anthony Weiner) is well aware the Republicans don’t have a monopoly on sexual deviance.

Just for information, I had been a registered Democrat for most of my life until the last primary when I saw potentially five candidates who would try to drag the federal government back to its enumerated power as outlined in our founding documents. None of the five made it to the top of the ticket. So I did not vote for Trump, but several times he pleasantly surprised me. No, I didn’t vote for Hillary either.

As far as money spent on elections, it does not take a math whiz to find out who spent the most in contested areas for Congress, the Senate as well as presidential, including outside groups such as PAC funds. Washington once said, “The power to tax is the power to destroy.” In closing, I do have a question for both sides. If 10 percent tithings seem to be acceptable for most religions, why isn’t it enough for Caesar?
