Process for marijuana grow facilities up for debate

TONOPAH — The selection process for medical marijuana grow facilities and the dispensary will be up for discussion when Nye County Commissioners meet at commission chambers here at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The meeting can be viewed by video conference from the commission chambers at 2100 Walt Williams Dr. in Pahrump.

At the last commissioner’s meeting May 19, the board was inclined not to limit the number of applicants sent to the state of Nevada seeking to open medical marijuana establishments.

In other business, commissioners will consider the responsibilities of the Nye County Water District Board. Commissioner Frank Carbone questioned the reason for keeping the water board at their last meeting May 15.

Commissioners will consider appointments to three positions on the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission that are set to expire. Two members of the Gabbs town advisory board may be replaced, they have been asked to appear at the meeting to state their case, which involves violations of the Nevada Open Meeting Law. Commissioners will also consider appointments of three members of the Animal Advisory Committee whose terms are expiring and there has been one resignation. There are also nominations scheduled to the Rural Nevada Development Corporation board of directors.

Commissioners will discuss rules for putting campaign signs on county property. Another item would convert the existing volunteer ambulance service to a new program for volunteer ambulance service in Nye County.

The Regional Transportation Commission 2014-15 fiscal year budget is up for approval, which is funded by the 4-cent local gas tax.

The presentation of the Rural Desert Southwest Brownfields Coalition Area Plan is scheduled at 10 a.m. The coalition of five counties is funded by a $1 million federal grant, it addresses the cleanup of contaminated industrial sites.

Commissioners will consider appointing members to committees to prepare arguments for and against the Nye County School District bond question in the November election. A new state law requires committees to be appointed to prepare arguments for ballot questions.

The county will consider becoming a formal co-sponsor of the town of Pahrump grant application for an environmental impact statement for the Pahrump Valley airport project.

A resolution certifying the town of Beatty area plan as an amendment to the Nye County comprehensive master plan is on the agenda.

A contract with Pearson Brothers Construction for grading the runway safety area and object free area at the Beatty Airport, a management and inspection contract with Atkins North America and the submission of a grant application to the Federal Aviation Administration is on the agenda.

Wulfenstein Construction Company has offered to install a test portion of Super Pave material on a portion of road in Pahrump at no cost to the county. A request for waiving landfill fees for disposing about 100 cubic yards of construction debris in the Tonopah Main Street sidewalk improvement project will also be considered.
