Contract approved for Calvada Boulevard paving
Nye County Commissioners on Nov. 12 approved a $137,386 contract with Wulfenstein Construction Company, the only supplier of SuperPave material, to treat a section of Calvada Boulevard between Blagg Road and Red Rock Drive.
A report by the Nye County Public Works Department said they were pleased with the preliminary performance of the SuperPave material during a test project at the intersection of Calvada Boulevard and Pahrump Valley Boulevard last June.
The work includes addressing a SuperPave overlay 400 feet north and 200 feet south on Blagg Road.
Jim Wulfenstein wrote county commissioners his company is experienced in applying unique, specialized asphalt mixes in the Death Valley area. Through years of testing different asphalt mix designs, CalTrans, the California highway system and federal highways have gone exclusively to SuperPave mixes, he said.
Perpetual Pavement, together with SuperPave, combined smoothness and safety advantages of asphalt with an advanced, multi-layer design process that with routine maintenance extends the useful life of a roadway, Wulfenstein said.
The bill includes $98,302 for the SuperPave mix and $10,852 for asphalt installation. Asphalt patching will cost $18,418. Nye County public works crews will mill Calvada Boulevard before the paving.
The project is funded in the 2015 county roads budget. The request passed without a discussion.
