Chili cook-off charity event returns March 7

The fourth annual Silver State Chili Cook-off returns Saturday, March 7 at Petrack Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The International Chili Society will have 20-member contestants that come from many states to compete for prizes.

The three categories of chili are traditional red chili, chili verde and salsa. Entry is $35 and the top prize will be $1,000. The winner in each category will be eligible to compete in the society’s world cook-off later this year.

There is also an amateur category that local residents can participate in with an entry fee of $25. First prize is $100.

Attendees can purchase tickets for $5 and receive a spoon and 10 two-ounce cups for chili tasting.

The event includes free entertainment by Lynn Peterson and The Phatt Kattz throughout the day. The Silver Tappers will perform at 1 p.m. in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The Gold Seekers will be on hand to give demonstrations all day. The Pahrump Valley Gunfighters, along with the Beatty Gunfighters, will be looking for people to arrest as well as having a few gunfights throughout the day.

There will be a car show assisted by the Pahrump Valley Cruisers.

On Sunday, March 8 the fundraising continues with a golf tournament at Mountain Falls Golf Course. The fee to participate is $75 which includes the greens fee, a golf cart and a luncheon. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and prizes will be awarded.

Applications for both events are available at Frazier Furniture, 1241 E. Calvada Blvd.

Proceeds from both events will be donated to No To Abuse, a nonprofit organization partly supported by annual grants. Events such as the cookoff help to meet its budget needs.

Ron Frazier of Frazier Furniture and Karen Jackson of KNYE radio are the event organizers.

Frazier said last year’s events brought in more than $10,000 for the charity.

“Even though the cook-off is a light-hearted affair, the judging is very stringent and non-biased,” Frazier said. “It’s all blind tasting.”
