NCSO set to kick off free Great Summer Program June 1

The Nye County Sheriff’s Office is set to kick off its Great Summer Program, offering free activities to area youth.

The summer program is open to children from kindergarten to grade 8, and is held at various sites throughout Nye County.

The emphasis of the series is aimed at keeping kids active during the summer months through organized series of events.

“We do physical activity, just different games that they compete for,” Deputy Alexandra Fernandez said. “They earn points and at the end of the week we tally up all the points and whoever gets first place gets a medal, and then prizes will be handed out.”

In addition to the free activities, Fernandez said children are also offered free lunch at each event, and are only asked to bring sunscreen and water to keep them safe from the summer heat.

“The school district, when we are at the schools, will provide us with free lunch,” she said. “Then for Round Mountain and Tonopah, Scolari’s and the Round Mountain General Store will donate the lunches for us.”

Depending on the site, Fernandez said that the turnout can be anywhere from 50-300 kids taking part in a given event.

The program is able to run free of charge to the children that participate through various donations from area businesses and organizations.

“We get donations from Round Mountain Gold, they have helped us in the past with grants for the program,” Fernandez said. “We also get help through NyE Communities Coalition. We get a lot of donations throughout the community that help us out with the program.”

The Sheriff’s Office is also looking for parents and high school students who would like to volunteer for the program. If you are interested in volunteering, give the Nye County Sheriff’s Office a call at 775-751-7000.
