Quilts given in honor of wartime service
More than two dozen local veterans were recognized for their valor and sacrifice this month with a program new to the community.
Quilts of Valor has been in existence since 2003, but earlier this year local resident and veteran Denise Kearl became involved with the program after visiting a meeting in Las Vegas back in January.
Their mission, Kearl said, is to cover servicemembers and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
Kearl spoke about one of the recipients, who is the oldest living female veteran in Nye County.
"Her name is Pauline Pavlick, who served in the United States Navy during World War II," she said. "She was very pleased and very grateful to be presented with the quilt, and she's 94 years old."
The crafters who make the one-of-a-kind quilts are from the Shadow Mountain Quilters.
Kearl noted with such a large veteran population in Pahrump and Nye County, the group has their work cut out for them.
"We're going to have a job on our hands but we are up to the challenge," she said. "We are trying to locate them and get them requested and the guild will start making the quilts in January. If anyone wants to be part of the quilting guild they can contact the Shadow Mountain Quilters."
Additionally, Kearl said the group is looking to do another presentation for local veterans sometime next year.
"It will be in the spring and hopefully we can possibly do two presentations," she said. "If anyone wants to request a quilt for a veteran, they can just go to the website, www.QOVF.org and request it there or they can call me and I can do it for them."
