Nye County School District to laud Teachers of the Year

An event honoring the efforts of area educators is scheduled for Saturday.

The 17th annual Stand for Children Day and Teacher of the Year celebration takes place at the NyE Communities Coalition Activities Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event celebrates the respective achievements of Nye County School District’s mentors by recognizing each for what they bring to the classroom and their community.

Coalition Manager Heidi Labastida said the teachers are actually nominated by principals of the schools.

“We are asking each principal from each school in Nye County to participate,” she said. “The principals ask their staff to nominate one teacher from one school. This covers elementary, middle and the high school. We also sent an invitation to the staff at Pathways and to the Community Christian Academy.”

During the ceremony, selected students of the teachers talk about their classroom experience with the nominated instructors, followed by a formal introduction.

The event is punctuated with entertainment from additional students performing dance, song and musical recitals. Lunch is also served.

Labastida noted a first for this year’s celebration. “This year we actually invited all the county schools to participate,” she said. “The students do just about all of the work. They escort the teacher up on stage and another student will introduce the teacher who will then get a chance to speak about their recognition. The students also sing and some will play instruments. This is the first time all of the schools in the county have been invited to this event. We thought it’d be a great idea to extend the invitation to everybody.”

For teachers in northern Nye County who can’t make the event, Labastida said they will still be recognized.

“Even if they can’t attend, we’ll make sure we will have something sent to them because we want to recognize all the teachers within the Nye County School District which is very important to us. They show a lot of dedication and effort working with their students. They dedicate so much time, love and patience to our children.”

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the coalition’s main office at 1020 E. Wilson Road for $10 each.

The nominated teachers will each receive two complimentary tickets.

Labastida said the coalition would like to gauge how many attendees to expect.

“We would like to have people RSVP so we can kind of know how much lunch will need to be provided, especially this year because we are inviting all of the schools within the county,” she said. “They can also call us at 775 727-9970 for additional information.”
