Man fatally shot by Nye deputies in Pahrump
A Pahrump man is dead after being shot by two Nye County Sheriff’s deputies early Tuesday, authorities said.
The deputies were executing a search warrant for a residence at the Anchor IN Mobile Home Park on 150 N. Leslie St. about 2 a.m., the Nye Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
During the execution of the warrant, shots were fired and the subject of the warrant was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No deputies were injured.
The two deputies who fired their weapons are currently on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is a customary practice for officer-involved shootings.
Sheriff Sharon Wehrly has scheduled a news conference for Thursday morning at the sheriff’s office to release further details of the deadly shooting.
The identity of the deceased, as well as the deputies involved, will be released at that time. It’s not known whether the man had a gun.
Witness account
George Sausman, whose family owns the property, is the maintenance manager of the quiet, well-kept mobile home park.
Sausman said he and his wife were awakened by the sound of gunfire directly across from his property just after 2 a.m.
“I heard gunshots in rapid succession,” he said late Tuesday morning. “My wife thought it was fireworks so we didn’t really pay that much attention and went back to bed. I looked out my window and saw all the cops out there, but figured whatever it was, they had it under control and I went back to bed.”
Sausman described the man as a “regular guy” who has lived at the property for several years.
He said the man appeared to be in his 50s or slightly older.
“It was just one guy who lived there, and he wasn’t what you would call a troublemaker and he pretty much kept to himself,” Sausman said. “He just seemed like a regular guy and I believe he told me that he was a retired trucker.
“I recall that he was telling us he had some medical issues,” Sausman said. “We would go for a walk sometimes, and we would see him outside. He would tell us that he wished he could walk with us, but he had health problems and wasn’t able to do it. I work as a maintenance manager here and my family owns the place. It’s a very quiet community, and we maintain it that way.”
