Pahrump veteran receives Quilt of Valor

A World War II veteran from Pahrump was the beneficiary of a gift and symbol of appreciation for his service.

Members of Pahrump’s Quilts of Valor bestowed 93-year-old veteran Robert Forslund with a one-of-a-kind personalized quilt, created by members of the organization.

Forslund served as a U.S. Navy Seabee.

Denise Kearl, group leader of Pahrump’s Quilts of Valor, said quilts are created for any and all area veterans.

The event took place at Terrible’s Roadhouse.

“We make the quilts for veterans in Nye County,” she said. “They are all customized quilts, so they are one of a kind. We have been in existence since January of 2016, and so far, we’ve done more than 121 quilts up to this point.”

At present, the group consists of roughly 35 quilters.

Kearl noted how simple the process is to order a quilt.

They go to the website for the foundation where they submit a request online.

“Every veteran is eligible to receive a quilt,” she said. “All they have to do is request it. They go to the quiltsofvalor.org website, and they can submit a request for themselves, or even a family member can request it for them. The request is then sent to our state coordinator, Victoria Colburn-Hall, who is in Las Vegas. When she receives it, she sends it to me if they are a Nye County resident.”

To date, more than 164,000 quilts nationwide have been created by the national foundation.

Roughly 20 friends of Forslund and at least seven members of Pahrump’s Quilts of Valor attended the ceremony.

“As far as I know, he doesn’t have any family who lives in Pahrump,” Kearl said. “He was very happy and appreciative for the quilt. I invited him to be at our special event in November.”
