Boys take Sunset League title; looking to add Southern regional
The Trojans boys and girls cross-country are preparing for regionals.
Both teams had a great boost from the divisional meet last Friday at Basic High School where they both posted good times.
The Pahrump Valley High School boys cross-country team took first place with 21 points to win the Sunset League Class 3A meet on the 5,000-meter course, Cheyenne was second (48), Desert Pines was third (87) and Western fourth (89).
For the boys team, senior Trojans runner Bryce Odegard cruised to win the divisional championship with a 16-minute, 17-second time out of 32 runners, Jovan Ibarra of Desert Pines was second (17:16) and James Fincher of Mojave was third (17:27), sophomore Grant Odegard of Pahrump Valley was fourth (17:50), sophomore Michael Sonerhohlm of Pahrump was fifth (17:55) and senior Cole Goodman of Pahrump was sixth (17:56).
Other Pahrump runners: Junior Jacob Cipollini (18:17) was ninth and senior Layron Sonerholm (18:22) was 10th.
Trojans head cross-country coach Matt Kolodzieczyk said both girls’ and boys’ finishes will help the team at regionals this Friday at Boulder City.
“The strong finish for the boys will help with confidence going into the regional meet,” the coach said. “Bryce Odegard knows all the intricacies of the course at Boulder City and he should do well. The teams to watch out for are Moapa and Tech.”
For the girls, Jazmin Felix (19:08) of Desert Pines took first place out of 32 runners, second place was Nayeli Perea-Barco (20:12) of Desert Pines, Trojans sophomore runner Diamond Sonerholm (21:44) took third, junior Katherine Goodman (22:02) was fourth.
The first-place girls Sunset League team was Desert Pines with 30 points, Pahrump Valley (36) was second place, Cheyenne (75) was third and Western (95) was fourth.
Other Pahrump girls: Finishing in eighth place, senior Grace Plumb (22:47), senior Cynthia Martin (23:08) ninth place, sophomore Terrena (24:10) Martin 13th place, 15th place Nsringa Breathwaite (24:29), and 18th place was Shailynn Winter (25:19).
Kolodzieczyk said he was satisfied with how they did at divisionals.
“We were happy to see how they placed for it shows that the girls can run with Desert Pines and take them,” the coach said.
