Father faces charges in 4-year-old’s death

A sheriff’s investigator has sent a report to the Nye County District Attorney’s Office suggesting criminal charges be filed against the father of a 4-year-old boy killed on Jan. 8 when a truck rolled over him.

Tyler Chandler may face child neglect and endangerment charges as a result of leaving his son Dallyn Chandler inside a vehicle by himself in a driveway on West Blosser Ranch Road.

The truck was left running in the driveway and the boy was left unattended and unrestrained inside the vehicle. Somehow the truck began to move and the boy was fatally injured trying to get out.

Sheriff Tony DeMeo said Tuesday a charging request was sent to the DA’s office. There is no official word yet whether prosecutors will bring any charges.

NCSO Det. Eric Murphy, the lead investigator in the case, said while it is ultimately up to the state whether or not to file formal charges against Tyler Chandler, the NCSO’s decision to submit the request was based on several factors, including the fact that a 4-year-old was left unrestrained in a running vehicle.

“We sent a report over telling them what we had investigated so they can review it. The deciding factor was (the victim) was 3 years old (sic) and was not in a car seat. It was then found that Chandler was attempting to leave with him and the vehicle was not registered and he (the father) didn’t have a driver’s license. So we sent all of those facts over and they’ll be the ones to decide if charges are ultimately filed or not,” the investigator said.

Sheriff’s deputies and Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Services were first called to the residence in the 2700 block of West Blosser Ranch Road at 12:22 p.m. the day of the incident for a report of a pedestrian versus motor vehicle accident.

When they arrived, first responders found witnesses giving CPR to an unresponsive Dallyn Chandler and an adult male complaining of leg and back pain. The adult reportedly attempted to stop the vehicle, but was struck by it before he was able to do so.

Medics on scene determined Dallyn Chandler needed to be sent to University Medical Center in Las Vegas. He later died there.

The injured adult male was transported for treatment locally to Desert View Hospital.
