Bob Alvis at the museum, Amargosa Valley Days

It will be another busy weekend for locals wanting to get out and about.

The Pahrump Valley Museum and Historical Society will hold its monthly lecture May 10 at 1 p.m. in the museum on Basin Avenue. Robert N. Alvis will be speaking on western explorer Edward Fitzgerald Beale.

Alvis has been a resident of Pahrump since June, 2000, moving here from Boulder, Colo., where he retired as a longtime federal civil servant. He worked for more than 30 years in the U.S. Department of Commerce in its science agencies, the National Bureau of Standards and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Alvis got his master’s degree in history from the California State University in Northridge in 1960. He is a book collector with an extensive personal library. He has spoken on the American Revolution, Shakespeare’s First Folio and the Place of Lafayette in American and French history.

While Bob was doing research for a lecture on the use of camels by the Army, he discovered the explorations of Beale.

Beale was a major figure in the West in the late 19th century. Beale made several trips across the United States and was key in laying out the southern route for the transcontinental railroad.

He was an Indian agent in California and the state surveyor, where he was instrumental in laying out the border between California and Nevada. Beale amassed a huge property near Tejon, Calif., and a large portion of his ranch exists today.
