Comedy night, Moody Scott tickets, Biz Expo and more this weekend

There are a good number of events set for this weekend, but unlike last weekend, where everything was happening in a single location, this weekend’s events are spread out.

The annual Biz Expo sponsored by the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce is this Friday and Saturday at the Pahrump Nugget Events Center. The event will be from noon to 6 p.m. April 25 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26.

Residents who have lost loved ones will have the opportunity to celebrate their memories and honor them at the 11th Annual ‘Celebration of Life – Live Butterfly Release’ in Pahrump. The Nathan Adelson Hospice Foundation will host the event at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27 at Calvada Eye on East Calvada Boulevard outside the NYE County Government Offices. The butterfly release will commence at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The premise of the butterfly release is based on an American Indian legend for carrying wishes to the heavens. The legend said that if anyone desired a wish to come true, they had to capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. The butterfly, which makes no sound, could not reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit, who hears and sees all. The butterfly carried the wish to the heavens to be granted.

The Kiwanis will hold the first of two Laughing Under the Stars comedy night fundraisers for two shows, Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26 at Sanders Family Winery.

The two headliners are Jimmy Della Valle and Tim Homayoon and tickets are on sale now for $20 each. Call 727-1776 to reserve a table and bring a picnic to enjoy with the wines and other beverages. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., show begins at 7:30 p.m.

PV Wings &Things is showing UFC Fight 172 at 4 p.m., April 26 at 1301 S. Loop Road. Tickets are $10 per person, which entitles attendees to one free drink from well liquors or other drink specials. There will be giveaways as well.

There is an artists’ reception for all the artists with displays hanging in the exhibit installed March 31 at Pahrump Art Gallery on East Street beside the library. The event is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 26. The featured artist is Princy Simonsen.

Another event is coming to Tecopa, Calif., next weekend. The legendary blues musician Moody Scott is celebrating 50 years in the music industry and the release of his new CD “Groovin’ Out of Life.”

The event will begin at noon May 3 and Scott said, “It will last until the fun is over.”

Scott has invited other performers to join him on the stage at Tecopa Hot Springs Resort beside Pastel’s Bistro. The menu will feature Creole Cajun food of southwest Louisiana. Tickets for food and the show are $20 in advance. Scott’s CD will be available for $10.

Other performers include Matt Hews and BoneDaddy MC. Scott will be backed up by the Red Hot Retro All-Star Band.

There are rooms and cabins available at the resort as well as camping spaces and RV spots. Call 760-852-4420 for tickets and information.

The 19th annual Art &Sol in the Desert show and sale will be held in conjunction with the 9th annual High Desert International Film Festival on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, 2014, at the Pahrump Nugget. The events are sponsored and hosted by the Pahrump Arts Council.

Booths will be 10 feet deep and as wide as needed, with a fee of $1 per square foot. Entry applications must be received by April 25 to be included in color for the Art &Sol in the Desert program book. Later applicants will be on a black and white insert.

Applications will continue to be accepted on a first come, first served basis until all spaces are filled. Artists may submit applications and secure payments on the PAC website pvpac.org.
