Possibly the largest yard sale ever held in Pahrump is taking place this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24 and 25 inside the former Skate Zone, next to Frazier Furniture, from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day.
The proceeds from the event will go to help sustain the Pahrump Senior Center’s Meals On Wheels program.
Members of the community have brought their items to the Skate Zone and agreed to donate at least 50 percent of their sales to Meals On Wheels.
Ron Frazier, owner of Frazier Furniture, donated the use of his trucks and staff to pick up larger items.
In addition to the indoor event, individuals are holding their own yard sales throughout the community. They have made the same pledged donation. For individual locations visit www.mypahrump.com.
There are three rooms full of sale items. One room is for new and gently-used clothing, another is stocked with furniture and another houses a variety of household goods.
The Pahrump Senior Center’s Meals On Wheels program delivers hundreds of meals to shut-in Pahrump residents every day. Anne Blankenship, the Senior Center site manager, said, “This is our hardest program to fund. We receive a grant that pays about one third of the cost. The rest comes from donations. We constantly struggle to keep the program going. We are very grateful for the help the yard sale will bring.” She added, “We are holding a pancake breakfast at the center on Saturday, October 25th from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. We will use those proceeds for the program as well. The cost for the breakfast is $5 per person. Children under 10 eat for $3 each.
The sponsors and volunteers who have worked to bring this event about are too numerous to list. Of special note, however, are Ron Frazier for organizing the event location needs, Karen Jackson, owner of KNYE radio, for announcements over the last few weeks of the event and owner Debbi Brooks for donating the use of the Skate Zone building.
Frazier said, “This is one of the largest undertakings I’ve ever been involved with. We want to make this a big success. We would like to hold this event again in the future.”
The senior center is a nonprofit organization. It provides nutrition, socialization and transportation to the seniors of Pahrump. All services are provided through grants and donations.
Some of those services include lunch, Monday through Friday, to an average of 100 seniors a day. It also transports seniors and brings them to the center for lunch and socializing and provides them with a ride back home.
Other services include local transportation to its seniors for medical appointments, shopping and other personal needs. These services have a suggested nominal donation based upon the service.
