Dancers, choir perform at MLK day fundraiser

Approximately 200 guests attended Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s annual All People's Breakfast at the Pahrump Nugget Event Center on Monday.

The 14th annual event serves as the largest fundraiser for the Pahrump's Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Foundation, over the years raising tens of thousands of dollars for eligible area students.

Aside from providing scholarships to students each year, the Martin Luther King Jr., Scholarship Foundation also makes regular donations to area nonprofit organizations.

Following breakfast, attendees were treated to entertainment during the ceremony, which included a live auction, courtesy of Nye County Public Administrator Robin Dorand-Rudolph.

The program also included performances by Church of the Harvest Praise Dancers and the MLK Choir.

Memories of Dr. King's vision were shared by Dore Forskey, followed by Barbara Ferguson, who serenaded the audience with an inspirational ballad, prior to the closing ceremony performed by members of the Pahrump Valley High School JROTC program, led by Col. Patrick Nary.

Since its beginning in 2002, the Pahrump MLK Scholarship Foundation has contributed more than $40,000 in scholarships to area students looking to advance their education.

This year, the foundation will again bestow four $1,000 scholarships.

Scholarship applications can be found at Pahrump Valley High School as well as the Pahrump Community Library.

The event has grown exponentially, as it was first held at what used to be known as the Pahrump Country Club on Buol Road, while the second All People's Breakfast was held at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.
