No To Abuse receives $10,000 from AT&T

The local organization dedicated to supporting victims of domestic violence received a much-needed shot in the arm this week.

Officials at No To Abuse graciously accepted a $10,000 donation from AT&T on Sept. 15.

Robin Shope, program manager for domestic violence, said she and her staff are grateful for any additional assistance provided to the agency.

"With grants being what they are right now, any donation, especially from the private sector, is greatly appreciated," Shope said.

Kerry Shilling, program manager at No To Abuse, said the agency provides a variety of services for those in need.

"We cover many different needs in the community," she said. "From assistance to victims of domestic violence, to working with foster youth. We also have community support services, family support and parenting classes and many other services."

No To Abuse Executive Board President James Oscarson applauded the donation during the check presentation.

Oscarson is also Nevada's District 36 assemblyman, which includes Pahrump.

"The support and advocacy services are also provided to their non-offending family members," Oscarson said. "Domestic abuse is rarely talked about yet it is all too common in households in our area. As a community we have a real opportunity to change behavior through education and support systems to create a healthy, familial environment."

AT&T Nevada President Stephanie Tyler said No To Abuse connects the community to more than just resources.

"They provide the care and attention that is often unspoken about in the community," she said. "All the while creating prevention training to help families every day. We're proud to support the good work they do every day and is often under the radar."

Nevada Outreach Training Organization's Executive Director Rick Marshall said No To Abuse also provides services in the areas of anger management, crisis intervention and family support.

"The mission is to grow healthy organizations, people and environments across Nye and Esmeralda counties by partnering with individuals, organizations and agencies in a cooperative and collaborative effort to increase services and opportunities."
