Organization, school district, community coming together for sew-in

NyE Communities Coalition is working in collaboration with Linda Fitzgibbons, Homeless Liaison for Nye County School District, and coordinator Barbara Johnston, a member of the Pahrump Valley community to host a Community Sew-In.

The sew-in will take place in the activity center at the NyE Communities Coalition, Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is slated to benefit the 400-plus children who are homeless or are in need, who attend school in Nye County. At the Community Sew-In, pillowcases and draw-string bags are made for the children.

"The Community Sew-In is an old-fashioned sewing day where anyone can come to enjoy, helping the kids while we are doing it." Johnston said.

Fabric for the sew-in is donated by the Pahrump Valley Rotary Club, Pahrump Party Store, DAVA Chapter 15, and community donation boxes located at the NyE Communities Coalition and Nevada State Bank.

"Donations are always welcome and needed. Anything helps," Johnston said.

Volunteers help fill the draw-string bags with hygiene essentials and distribute them to the schools of Nye County.

This year marks the third year the event will take place in town. According to Johnston, there are plans to have other events in the future and for them to continue annually.

An RSVP is required to ensure there is enough material available. All interested in attending the event can reserve a spot by calling Barbara Johnston at 775-751-5356, or emailing her at Barbquilts@yahoo.com.

If you have any questions or further ways to help the homeless children of Nye County please contact Linda Fitzgibbons at 775-727-1875.
