Rotary has the best odds in town and a party, too

The Pahrump Valley Rotary Club hosts its 2014 Cash Extravaganza at Mountain Falls banquet hall from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 12. Someone will walk away $10,000 richer.

Entry is $75 for two people, which includes only one ticket for the $10,000 drawing. Only 300 tickets will be sold. Roy Mankins, president of Rotary Club, said, “You can’t get better odds than that.”

The event takes place on the patio outside of the bar and grill room.

A prime rib dinner buffet will be served in the grill room for $20 per person and those tickets must be purchased in advance.

The party on the patio includes a free wine tasting provided by Sanders Family Winery, Pahrump Valley Winery and Cline Cellars of Sonoma, Calif. The Cline family owns Tonopah’s Mizpah Hotel. The Tonopah Brewery will provide free beer tasting.

Lynn Peterson of the well-known Phatt Kattz will team up with the Woody Woods Trio to provide the entertainment. Woods is on keyboard, Edger Seals on bass and Greg Hartline plays guitar. Peterson rounds out the ensemble as the vocalist.

The Silver City Shooters, a gunfighter group, will be on hand dressed in their old west attire and performing skits. Attendees are invited to dress likewise.

The local Rotary chapter was established in March of 1985. It wasted no time with launching fundraisers and held its first Cash Extravaganza that same year. This year makes it the 29th annual event.

In addition to the monthly membership dues and fundraisers, individual members donate their time and money to support the club’s many community projects.

It sponsors two to three blood drives a year and provides teacher mini-grants to help pay for classroom materials and projects. For the Giving Day project, it organizes, distributes and retrieves the Angel Wish cards. These are the ones that have been completed by the public, who have agreed to fulfill the dreams of needy children in the community at Christmas.

Members participate in town clean-up days and Rotary donates scholarship funds to local students for higher education. The club funds the Shots For Tots at the annual Back To School Health Fair held at Desert View Hospital and cooks hot dogs at the event.

Members also cook hot dogs at the the Senior Health Fair. For the Rotary Youth Leadership Camp, two scholarships each are awarded to eighth graders and high school seniors.

As part of a Rotary International districtwide project, members become involved with the “Corazon Super-Build,” where the club chooses a village in Mexico and provides funding and volunteers to work with villagers to build, repair or remodel a schoolhouse.

The club then provides the area locals, who helped with construction, scholarships for their children for further education.

Advance tickets for the prime rib dinner buffet can be purchased at Roy Mankins Allstate or Kathryn Weill Allstate.
