County commissioners fill Tonopah board vacancy

Nye County commissioners on Tuesday appointed Donald Kaminski as a new board member for Tonopah based on the recommendations from the four board members.

Kaminski will fill in the position of Horace Carlyle, who resigned in December in the wake of the dispute about Northern Nye County Hospital Taxing District and a recall effort.

A longtime resident of Tonopah, Kaminski owns several businesses in town and has held multiple positions at the Tonopah Test Range. Kaminski also served in the U.S. Air Force. He is a graduate of Joliet Junior College and Clark County Community College.

Kaminski's term will expire on Dec. 31, 2016 as he picked up after Carlyle, who had another year left, resigned. Board members Janet Hatch and Tom Seley's terms also expire on the same date.

Kat Galli, deputy town clerk of Tonopah, said board members go for re-election every four years.

Nye County Commissioner Lorinda Wichman said the applicants do an "exceptional job," but the decision was made per town board recommendation.

Tonopah residents Michael Sain, Rhonda Link and Fred King also applied for the vacancy.

According to the information presented to Nye County commissioners, three out of four members of the board unanimously recommended Kaminski for the vacant position.

Duane Downing, vice president of the Tonopah Town Board, said that he was "excited" to have Kaminski come on board.

"He is very knowledgeable on all projects, has a very good business background. I think he is going to mesh in with the board very easily," Downing said about Kaminski.

Another board member, Doug Farinholt, said Kaminski is bringing "interesting" background along with interest in the community.

"I know that he is community-oriented and he will bring some interesting insight to the board," Farinholt said.

At the town board meeting on Feb. 10, the five members of the board will appoint a new chair, vice chair and clerk of the board.

Kaminski didn't return requests for comment by press time.
