Crime Corner

Police took one man into custody over the weekend after he allegedly tried to run from them following a report of domestic battery at a home on the south-end of town.

A Nye County Sheriff’s deputy was traveling in the area of Homestead and Thorn roads Friday evening, attempting to locate a suspect a fellow officer was looking to arrest in reference to a domestic battery case, when he reportedly spotted the person. The suspect, Christopher Kruse, was riding his bicycle northbound on Homestead Road when he was spotted.

The officer gave Kruse commands to get down on the ground with his hands behind his head, which an arrest report notes he did, although not before becoming argumentative.

A second deputy soon after arrived on scene at which time Kruse allegedly got up and began running through the desert. Despite the officers’ orders to stop running, Kruse was soon apprehended when he tripped over a bush.

He was subsequently placed under arrest for domestic battery and resisting a public officer. A search of his person following his arrest revealed Kruse also allegedly had a marijuana pipe in his possession as well.

Kruse was then transported to the Nye County Detention Center to be booked into custody,

COPS: Man parks car in roadway, scores second DUI

Parking his car in the middle of the roadway led to one man’s arrest last weekend after police discovered he was possibly under the influence of marijuana.

According to a declaration of arrest in the case, Saturday around 12:30 p.m. a deputy was asked to respond to the Osky Street area for a report of a possible drunk driver.

When the officer arrived, he discovered what appeared to be a vehicle parked in the middle of the roadway matching the description given by the person who called in the possible DUI.

The deputy then made contact with the driver, later identified as Joe Barrios Jr., who was inside the vehicle.

His eyes were reportedly glassy and bloodshot and his speech was slow and slurred. As Barrios stepped out of the vehicle, the responding deputy noted he saw what appeared to be several flakes of marijuana allegedly fall from the man’s shirt.

Barrios was asked to submit to a series of field sobriety tests, but after he allegedly failed the first one, declined to participate in any further testing.

A check on the status of Barrios’ driver’s license showed he did not have a valid license and furthermore that he had been convicted of a previous DUI in 2010.

He was subsequently placed under arrest for DUI drugs and transported to the local jail to be booked into custody.

COPS: Vodka, coke and driving don’t mix for one man

Police arrested one man for driving while intoxicated last week after he was allegedly caught driving the wrong way on a local highway.

In the early morning hours of last Friday evening, police reportedly spotted a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the roadway in the area of State Route 372 and Blagg Road.

After officers pulled the driver, later identified as Paul Edward Chadwick, over in the area of State Route 372 and Upland Avenue for a possible DUI, they noticed Chadwick was unsteady on his feet as he exited his vehicle. According to an arrest report, it was further noticed that the man had the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage on his breath and that his eyes were red and watery and his speech slurred.

When asked if he had anything to drink that evening, Chadwick allegedly replied he had four vodka and coke mixed drinks.

Due to certain medical conditions, Chadwick was administered a horizontal gaze nystagmus test and a breath test at the scene — both of which he failed.

The breath test show Chadwick allegedly had a blood alcohol content level of .118 percent, more than twice the legal limit.

Chadwick was placed under arrest and subsequently transported to the Nye County Detention Center to be booked into custody.
