High winds cause minor issues

Strong winds ripped through town Monday, making the cold temperature feel colder, kicking up dust and causing a single power-related issue.

"The strong winds experienced in southwestern Nevada have caused one outage in Valley Electric Association, Inc.'s territory," the cooperative said in a statement. "The outage primarily affected the Alien Convenience Store in Lathrop Wells."

The peak wind gust in Pahrump on Monday was clocked at 37 mph officially by the National Weather Service and the winds were tied to a system moving through the area.

"So a storm system moved through, then a cold front moved through yesterday morning," said National Weather Service meteorologist Chad Shafer. "The strongest winds were tied to the passage of that cold front."

The single outage is nothing compared to the widespread occurrence last month when record-setting rain drenched the valley. At one point 19,254 member meters were without power during the height of the outage, which lasted several hours. A storm the week before left almost 3,000 member meters without power for up to two-and-a-half hours.

The weather forecast for the remainder of the week is sunny, clear and mainly calm with temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s through Sunday.
