No students on board when bus, SUV crash

No injuries were reported following a collision between a Nye County School District school bus and a late model SUV late Monday afternoon.

Transportation Supervisor Cameron McRae said the crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 160 and Calvada Boulevard shortly after the driver dropped off the last of his students at the bus stop.

"It appears from the preliminary investigation that our school bus was turning left off of Calvada Boulevard to head northbound on State Route 160," he said. "He had just completed dropping off the last of his students and it appears that he did not see the oncoming vehicle. The collision turned the other vehicle around 180 degrees in the roadway."

Both drivers declined medical treatment, but the bus McRae said, made its final run transporting students.

He also noted the crash will not affect the route's timetable.

"Unfortunately with the age of the bus which is 23 years old, the damage that was sustained will most likely retire that school bus," he said. "The damage looks relatively minor but at that age, I'm not likely to put any more money into that school bus. It's unfortunate and it's been a very, very long time since this school district has had a chargeable incident. Preliminarily it looks like our driver was at fault."

Additionally, McRae said aside from Monday's incident, things have run relatively smoothly for the past three weeks.

"It's the first day of the third week of school and obviously this is something we would prefer not to deal with but other than that, it's been a pretty decent start to the school year."
